The Worst Compassion Parent ever

2/12/2014 10:30:00 AM

Read about why Sponsorship works here

In my career, I work for commissions and it is always easier to stay motivated if you can see what your hard work could buy you.  Back when I worked in a large holding pen of cubicles, I pasted my inspirations on the walls of my cube.  I had pictures of my family,  whatever shoes I wanted at the moment, and places.  All the places that I wanted to visit.  That way when I picked up the phone every morning I knew I was working towards the things that I wanted in life.  One boss in particular really liked the idea of vision boards so about 8 years ago I created one for my office.  This one was also covered in pictures of foreign cities but we were trying to get pregnant and my commissions were paying for all of my drs appointments so I added a big white house with a porch and in the corner a small picture of an interracial family.  Because I knew in my heart I wanted to adopt some day.

I told B about my vision board and he suggested that we start looking into sponsoring a child through Compassion International.  It would be something tangible and good that we could do with our commissions while we waited out drs. appointments and diagnosis.  So we sponsored two four year olds.  A little boy from Uganda and a little girl from the Dominican Republic.  They were adorable, chubby and from their pictures full of sass.  I was in love.  I wrote them often and I loved getting their cards and notes.  Our sweet little boy even wrote to tell us that he was praying that we could have a baby in our family.  I sent them pictures of us and our dogs and once LL arrived I sent them both announcements.

But once she got here,  I didn't write as often.  Oh I think about them and Pray for them but I struggle with what to say in a letter to two children who aren't afforded what our little girl is given in life.  I don't know what to say or how to say it,  I feel like as they get older and I get more distant that they just see me as an American trying to appease my conscious as I live an affluent life compared to theirs and send Compassion a check every month.  I also struggle with guilt because I have forgotten birthdays and Christmas.   I have become so invested in raising LL that they have been pushed aside.  How do I rectify this?  Do I apologize.   They aren't babies anymore,  and I wonder how they perceive me but more importantly how do they perceive Jesus.  Have I shown them enough Jesus?

And then I have to look at myself.  Having the money drafted daily is easy,   why am I stopping at the hard part? Why can't I invest more into these two little lives?  I let the monthly check appease my conscious when I know that I should be doing more and if not with my two little people than more in my community.   Honestly,  I know that my monthly money is providing these kids with an education and allowing them to be surrounded by those that love Jesus,  but I am not getting the blessings by stopping at just writing a check.   I need to invest more and I am going to be praying about how I can be a better example of my Jesus.

What I am into September 2013 Edition

10/08/2013 01:35:00 PM

Books

This month I met my Goodreads 2013 Challenge by finishing my 25th book.  At this season of my life, I am just not reading nearly as much as I have had in the past but I am happy that I am finally to a point where I can set the 2014 challenge a little higher than 25.

What Alice Forgot:   I read Moriarty's  newest novel "The Husband's Secret" and enjoyed it a lot until I read "What Alice Forgot",  this is a really good really thoughtful novel about life, marriage and motherhood.  I was entertained as well as challenged by this story.

One Thousand White Women: The Journals of May Dodd:  I so badly wanted to love this but terrible writing really got in the way of an interesting story.  Its fictional but written as if it were non fiction,  that isn't the problem though, the problem is that the author messes up historical facts and writes from a woman's point of view,  not only is the Author a man but his heroine sounds more like a modern day woman than somebody in the 1800s.  I think that many of her thoughts and actions were not inaccurate from a feminine point of view but also from a historical voice.

And the Mountains Echoed:  This was so very good.  If you liked the Kite Runner you will like this novel.  Its long and cumbersome but the stories weave together beautifully.

Music

Mainly Disney Junior Soundtracks and Daniel Tiger.  But when I get a few minutes alone I have been listening to the new Civil Wars cd,  The Le Miz soundtrack and Old Crow Medicine Show Mogg station.

TV & Movies

I just started watching New Girl on Netflix and I love it!

Hell On Wheels is a favorite and this past Saturday night was the finale.   It is on Netflix too.

I don't think I watched one single movie this whole month although the Great Gatsby is waiting to be watched on DVD :(

Friends help each other....

8/19/2013 08:00:00 PM

Friends help each other
Yes they do
Friends help each other
Yes they do
Even if you can do it by yourself
It's much more fun when friends can help
Friends help each other
It's much more fun when friends can help
Friends help each otherYes they do, it's true

We have become huge Daniel Tiger's Neighborhood fans around our house and this little nugget of truth in the song above has been sticking with me this week as I have watched my friends rally around me to help when I became a little stressed.

Last week, was a hard week for me,  I had more than one person I love in the hospital,  a stressed Mom, a stressed MIL, a stressed husband, a teething baby and Brian was out of town.  I felt the pull of wanting to be there for all the people I love but needing to stay put for LL.  All of this came bubbling to a head when there was a sudden act of toddler violence at playgroup last Thursday. I finally just said through my tears  (by this time the toddlers were done crying and it was just me weeping) I am stressed and I have had a hard time.  All three of my friends standing there jumped in to hug me and offer ways that they could help.   I took LL to one of their houses and treated myself to a hour at a coffee house to catch up on work emails and update my calendar.

Friends help each other
Yes they do

This week is the weird week where we don't have babysitters full time and school hasn't started my friend,  jumped in to watch LL today while I went to work and I'll watch her little boy this weekend so she can get her daughter ready for 1st grade.

Friends help each other
It's much more fun when friends can help

I love that God has placed women in my life that can demonstrate true friendship to LL and remind me of what real relationships look like.  I had been thinking about my hesitance in admitting that last week was hard when I mentioned it to another friend. She point blank asked me why I hadn't called and told her that I needed help.  This made me really look at myself and my pride,  Friends help each other....why is that so hard for me to accept and acknowledge?   I am not sure why I don't but I am thankful for people that are in my life that remind me of the truth in the little Daniel Tiger song.

Summer's End

The signs are all there, this last week both of my babysitters left for college and tonight at Target the school supply lists were out and giant pencils were hanging from the ceiling.  School starts here in one week and Mothers day out starts in two weeks.  The warm weather will stick around a little longer (ok a lot longer)  but the summertime fun will be over very soon.

Tonight as I was packing our bags for an afternoon at the pool tomorrow I was reflecting on the summer and how sad I am that it is almost over.   My toddler isn't in full time school but does go to Mothers Day Out 3 times a week.  So this summer she has been home a lot more than she will be this fall.  I loved every moment and while more time together has meant being more creative with work,  I think its worth every minute to start building summertime memories.

I have seen something in the blog world the last few weeks that really bothers me,  it seems that many mom bloggers are ready for school to start again and have written long posts on how ready they are for  for their kids to get back to their "jobs" of going to school.   This seems to follow the trend of recent posts extolling how its ok not to love to every minute of whatever stage of life you and your kids are in today.  And I get that,  the days are sometimes hard and long but I worry that by being so honest and focusing on our current feelings about that day we are diminishing the importance of truly savoring the moment.   Lets also remember that the Internet is forever,  someday your kids will read that post and their summer memories will forever be stained by your rant about needing to be alone. I also don't think that those mom's don't love every minute with their kids its just that I don't want to focus on the hard days.  I want to remember all the things that made this summer special.

  • Trips to the "animal zoo"
  • Super hot days spent in the museum
  • pool days and splash parks
  • family trips to get "ice cones" with daddy on super warm nights
  • nice long naps after afternoons in the sun
  • lazy mornings of Disney Junior
  • the Library and the used book store

I get that I may not always feel this way,  there may be a time where I long for the long summer days to end and for her to be back in school.  I have learned not to ever say "I will never...."  when it comes to parenting (hello,  Netflix at a restaurant)  but I do hope that I will stop to remember each and every summer and all the little things that made it so special.  I'll be honest...we need more structure that what we have had this summer but I am choosing to remember that this is a season and one that will end way sooner than I am ready for it to end and so today I am going to soak in the last two weeks of the only summer my baby will be two.

Back to Blogging....I hope!

8/05/2013 01:51:00 PM
I just may be the worst blogger of all time.  But truthfully,  I have had a few things on my plate and I just couldn't fathom adding something else,  but I need to write and I want to write. I have so much always in my head so I think that I will be trying to write on a more consistent basis.  I know that a blog should have a theme but mine doesn't and I don't see having a consistent theme in the near future.  But here are some things in my head and on my heart that I am going to start writing about....

  • Faith, feminism and living my life like Christ.
  • Mommy-hood and my life
  • Life Lessons for Lillie...things that I want her to know about life and how to navigate the hard moments.
  • Pinterest...I have started Pinning again and I think it would be fun to share my finds
  • Healthy eating...I have recently revamped my diet and I have lots of fun healthy recipes to share.
  • Reading....I read online and books all the time. I want to share some of my finds and likes.
Ok,  lets see if I can make this happen!

Choosing Joy

5/09/2013 05:54:00 PM

I chose the word JOY for myself this year.  I wanted to take time in the everyday to be joyful, to laugh,  to acknowledge a beautiful moment or to learn to enjoy the mundane tasks that often comprise the majority of the time.  I knew that in Joy I would find true gratitude and I would be surrounded by peace.

I have to admit my word for the year has been going well.  I find myself thanking God for the laundry I have to wash. I leave the dishes and read Brown Bear Brown Bear for the 20th time.   We have more dance parties and we make more messes.   I haven't been perfect but I know that I have woken everyday with the intention f Joy.  But lately I think that God is wanting me to see that when we make a pact with him to pray about an attitude when we come to him daily asking to be given joy that he expects it everyday.  Its one thing to find the beauty in the dish bubble and a completely another to find the joy in amidst the heartache.

So this is it friends 5 months into being joyful and  God is asking the hard questions,   Do you trust me,  when what is yours is taken away? Can you see the Joy through the demands of your career?  Can you find my Joy through your tears and your daughter's tantrums.  Can you comfort your husband and still find the the joy in his unyielding  faith?   My proverbial rubber has hit the road and I am trying to count it all Joy.  I am praying that my family is surrounded in peace.  I am answering tough, too perceptive toddler questions with honesty and with a smile.

I am clinging to my verse:

"You will go out in joy and be led forth in peace; the mountains and hills will burst into song before you, and all the trees of the field will clap their hands."

Isaiah 55:12

just to clarify,  this was born out of my reflection on the first 5 months of my word of the year.  however,  with some of the big things we are experiencing as a family  it was timely!

Zucchini Tortelini Soup

3/05/2013 08:25:00 PM
Several weeks ago we had dinner at a friends house and she made a Meatball and Zucchini soup that was so tasty.  She sent me the recipe and I read over it a couple of times.  Tonight I created my own take on her recipe with the ingredients I had on hand.

2 cups of Chicken broth
1 large can of diced tomato
1 small onion
3 celery stalks
2 zucchini squash
garlic
Salt and Pepper
1 TBSP Thyme
2 TBSP butter
1 package refrigerated tortellini ( I used Whole wheat cheese but I think any would work)

Cook the onions and garlic in the butter until clear.   Add the Chicken broth and all other ingredients and simmer for 30 minutes.

This was really tasty and pretty easy.
