2010 New Years Resolutions

12/30/2009 09:39:00 AM

This year I chose to set 33 small goals for myself but out of those I have three that I really want to focus on...

  • Run a 5K: I need to be in better shape and I think that training to run a 5k will help me achieve that. I don't see myself becoming a runner but I know that if I have a goal I will usually beat or surpass the goal. I downloaded a Couch to 5k program on my iphone and will be using that for my 9 week training. In addition I am going to try to take some classes that are available at the gym on the days that I don't walk/run

  • Memorizing Scripture: I have realized that I haven't memorized anything new in a very long time. So I am challenging myself to commit more scriptures to Memory.

  • Eating Gluten Free/Sticking to my Menu Plan: I know I feel better when I eat gluten free and I know that I will eat gluten free when I have a plan. What has worked in the past is to decide on 3-4 meals a week and then just to be sure that the fridge is stocked with healthy lunch and snack ideas. Not assigning meals to a specific day allows us to be a little more flexible.

The Christmas Tour of Homes

12/13/2009 10:52:00 PM

I love our tree, I guess you would say that the theme is red and silver but all of our ornaments have some sentimental meaning. My mom has given me an ornament every year of my life and now give us one as a couple. In addition Brian and I often buy ornaments when we travel or on our shopping trips during the Christmas season. My tree skirt is actually the skirt from a Bridesmaid dress that I wore in a very good friends wedding.
These ornaments are from my grandparents tree when they were a younger first married couple. I love that I am able to have them in my home.
Even the Santa has Red Raider spirit. I made the candy dish one year when all the girls in my family went to the pottery painting place.
I love my Snowman couple!

I think I will leave this sign up all winter long.
I have collected pigs since I was a tiny little girl and I have a pig in every room but this is my first Christmas pig that isn't an ornament. Just seeing him on my porch makes me smile. He was a surprise gift from Brian this year, who adds to my decorations every year.
My sisters and I have an annual Gingerbread house competition and this was mine this year. My inspiration came from Martha Stewart and the trees were time consuming!
I try to do something different every year with my mantle. I like the simplicity of the bottle brush trees and that I could use my silver candlestick collection in a different way.

To see more Christmas Decorations go to The Nester for her annual Christmas home Tour.

Wreath Making

12/13/2009 03:26:00 PM
I bought this wreath the first Christmas that we were married. I saw it in a Pottery Barn Catalog and it was expensive. I found one similar at Michaels and with all of my coupons and everything it was affordable but still allot of money for us at the time. This wreath has been through 3 moves and hung on the door of every home we have ever lived in together. I decided this year that it was time for a new wreath but I was so sad at the thought of not having this one, I decided to rework it...I bought the supplies at Hobby Lobby and for $6.50 I have a new wreath without losing the sentimental value of my my red berry wreath

The Lone Tree

10/31/2009 05:46:00 PM
I took a picture of this tree in Maine....For some reason I am really drawn to lone trees. I seem to find one wherever I am visiting. I don't know what about them speak to me but something does.

2009 Book List

1/24/2009 12:01:00 PM
1.Rick Steves' Paris 2009 by Rick Steves' ****
This book was invaluable while we were in Paris. We carried it with us the whole trip and used it daily. One of the most helpful chapters listed the days and times that all the most popular attractions were open. Not only did Steves cover the well know Paris sites, he also gave a wonderful overview into the lesser known neighborhoods.

2.Change of Heart by Jodi Picoult **
I picked this book up in the Airport in Atlanta. It was on the best sellers list and I knew that Picoult was a good author. However, I didn't enjoy this book at all. It was well written and a very original story but in typical Picoult fashion it was very depressing. I also had a hard time relating to the characters. Just not my favorite book.

3.Secret Life of CeeCee Wilkes by Diane Chamberlain***
I loved this book. It was the first that I have read by Chamberlain and I really enjoyed the story and her style of writing. Some reviewers have compared her to Picoult but I like Chamberlains style much better. I will definatly try some of her other books.

4.Escape by Carolyn Jessop****
This was a great book about the FDLS and the fact that Jessop lived the horrors that she explains is a tragedy. I didn't learn anything new about the FDLS but I did enjoy hearing her perspective and thoughts now that she has escaped.

5. The Tenth Circle by Jodi Picoult**
You would think that I would stop reading her stories but I picked this up at the used bookstore and thought that I would try one more. I was again disappointed. I couldn't find one character in this book that I liked or cared about. It was depressing but again written very well.

6. Certain Girls by Jennifer Weiner*
Books like Certain Girls remind me how glad I am that I can read so fast. I didn't enjoy this as much as I have enjoyed Weiner's other books. It was slow and I felt that alternating between Joy and Cannie narrating was confusing and uneffective. This is a sequel to her hit book "Good in Bed" and I was really excited to see how the character of Cannie had grown and changed...but she hadn't. She still fell sorry for herself and didn't appreciate Peter and the others that loved her in life. I won't even get started on the end of the book...total waste of time.

7. Seventh Heaven by James Patterson ***

James Patterson books are my guilty pleasure. I tend to read them quickly. This was the 7th book in his Lindsey Boxer series. Other than the fact that I enjoyed it there isn't much to say. If you are a fan of murder mysteries than this is a great series. In typical James Patterson style you not only see things from the side of the Law you also get to see things from the mind of a killer.

8. Ruby Slippers by Jonalyn Grace Fincher *****

I heard Jonalyn speak earlier this year at church and really enjoyed what she had to say on the person of Jesus. She is a dynamic woman whose thoughts and ideas on womanhood and femininity echo exactly what I have been pondering and praying on this year. I would HIGHLY suggest this book if you are a woman wondering who you are in Jesus. She clings to being feminine and Godly.

*Wouldn't recommend it
**Ok, but not one that I would recommend
***Good Book worth checking out
***Enjoyed reading, good story or good information on the topic
***** Loved it!! This one is staying on my bookshelf.
